I must admit that I am not too familiar with Sylvia Kristel’s work, but not for a lack of wanting to be, I simply did not know about her. My knowledge of Dutch actors is embarrassingly minimal. Aside from Famke Janssen and Rutger Hauer, I must resort to referring to them vaguely like, “That redhead from Borgias.” If I had known they tended to star in movies in the softcore genre then they might have piqued my interest sooner.

How can a whole series of movies centered the sexual awakening of a woman fly under my radar for so long? Emmanuelle might be in a foreign language, but I do not think subtitles are even needed for most people to enjoy the flick. In fact, subtitles would probably just get in the way. If there is T and A on the screen then reading should be kept as far away as possible. If I wanted to intake sex by reading it then I would rent one of the erotic novels from the library. It might be a new low in embarrassment, but that is where self-checkout machines come into play. No more silent judging from the librarians.
